When you are thinking of buying the pair of skates, it is very important to define what type of skating that you are planning to do. As a word “ball” will mean hundred different types of balls, term “ice skates” also encompasses boots with the ice blades to play hockey, figure skating, racing, and ice dancing, and recreational skating. There are different skates made for all these types of activities.
Know the Difference
The figure skates are made with the stiff boot so the foot & ankle are nicely supported when the skater jumps and spins on ice. The lack of support in this boot will cause the skater’s foot & ankle to twist in landing that will cause them the injury. Even though it is tough to see difference from the distance, heel of the high quality of figure skate is made of the leather, instead of wood generally found on the recreational skates. The leather provides the resilient cushion when skater’s weight comes on one foot.
Get the Right Fit
Hockey & racing skates don’t feature such type of the built-up heel that you can find on the figure skate. The boots normally have the flatter sole. The figure skates have got prominent toe picks, jagged part of a blade that allows the skater to “fall in” the ice while jumping and pivoting. The racing & hockey skates have got no toe picks; as such skaters don’t perform such maneuvers. The recreational skates may have a bit smaller and not very sharp toe picks.
Range of Material
As they are made from the heavy leather, the figure skates are heavier than the skates made for hockey, racing and simple recreational skating. Many skate makers are designing recreational skates from the plastic, soft leather, vinyl, and heavy canvas, and all of them are lighter and generally comfortable for the simple skating activities. Break in time for the soft skates are generally short and nonexistent. The soft womens skates have internal room for the extra padding for comfort and warmth on the ice.
Ice skates are available in different inexpensive and best-quality of versions. The beginner & simple recreational skates generally come with the metal blades attached. The skates designed for the advanced skaters are generally sold without any blades, since advanced skaters at any sport wish to select their blades or have them mounted professionally on the skate boots.
